Effects of Subgingival Chlorhexidine Irrigation on Peri-Implant Maintenance
Felo A, Shibly O, Ciancio S, Lauciello F, Ho A. Am J Dent 1997; 10:107–110.
Objective
To evaluate the effect of using a Waterpik™ dental water flosser with the Pik Pocket™ tip and half-strength (0.06%) chlorhexidine (CHX) solution compared to rinsing with full-strength (0.12%) CHX for implant maintenance.
Methodology
This randomised, three-month clinical study included 24 patients, each with a minimum of two implants.
-
Group 1: Used the Waterpik dental water flosser with the Pik Pocket tip and 0.06% CHX once daily.
-
Group 2: Rinsed with 0.12% CHX once daily.
Plaque, gingivitis, bleeding, stain, and calculus were evaluated at baseline and at study completion.
Results
Patients using the water flosser with the Pik Pocket tip experienced significantly greater reductions in plaque, gingivitis, and stain than those who only rinsed with CHX.
For bleeding, the water flosser group achieved an 87% greater reduction in gingival bleeding compared to rinsing alone.
Conclusion
Using the Waterpik water flosser with the Pik Pocket tip and 0.06% CHX solution is significantly more effective than rinsing with 0.12% CHX for maintaining peri-implant health, reducing gingival bleeding, and improving overall oral hygiene.
