How to use Waterpik water flossers

Step 1

PREPARE the reservoir with warm water and insert the selected tip suited to your needs.

Note: If this is the first use, set the pressure control dial to high. Point the tip into the sink and turn on until water flows. Turn the unit off.

Step 2

PLACE the tip in the mouth at a 90° angle and partially close the lips, making an O-shape. Bend over the sink with your face looking down into it.

Step 3

POWER your unit on the lowest setting and aim along the gumline on the front and backside of the teeth. Allow excess water to flow into the sink.

Step 4

PAUSE between the teeth for three seconds to remove 99.9% of the plaque biofilm.

The benefits of using a water flosser

Using a Waterpik water flosser has many advantages and is scientifically proven to be more effective than interdental brushes for improving gingival health. Water flossers are especially valued because they are:

·       Delicate on sensitive gums: Water flossers have various modes, meaning you can choose the pressure that feels right for you. This is especially beneficial for those with periodontal disease or generally sensitive gums.

·       Easy to operate: Typical flossing methods require a specific technique to achieve necessary results – and many people aren't doing it right! Water flossing, however, is simple enough to do effectively at home.

·       Customisable: Our water flossers come with different tips and accessories to suit your needs. For example, if you have braces, our orthodontic tip is designed to get into all the crevices, removing debris and plaque build-up.

FAQs about how to use a water flosser

How to use a water flosser without making a mess

The key to mess-free water flossing is in your mouth positioning. Start by standing over the sink and in front of a mirror for guidance. As you begin, make an O shape with your lips to prevent any splashback off the tooth or your mouth. This way, the water will then flow gently out of your mouth and into the sink – and you won't need to wipe down your mirror every single time you floss!

Can you put mouthwash in a water flosser?

Yes, you can! Simply add mouthwash and water to the reservoir of your water flosser – no more than a 1:1 mouthwash to water ratio – and use as normal. Benefits of this method include plaque removal, neutralised odour and fresh breath. Just be sure to rinse out the reservoir afterwards.

Do I use a water flosser before or after brushing?

The choice is all yours. Some people prefer to use a water flosser before brushing, as it removes any debris in preparation for thorough brushing. Alternatively, flossing after brushing can target any debris that brushing missed.
