Periodontitis: symptoms, causes, & treatment

Periodontitis is a serious gum disease that develops when gingivitis (gum inflammation) is left untreated. It is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults.

Any type of periodontal treatment requires excellent daily care at home. Adding a Waterpik™ Water Flosser to your routine is one of the most effective ways to help improve gum health.

Periodontitis Symptoms

Along with the signs of gingivitis (red, swollen gums that bleed easily), symptoms of periodontitis may include:

  • A bad taste in the mouth or persistent bad breath
  • Gums that pull away from the teeth (recession)
  • Loose teeth or changes in bite when chewing
  • Sore or tender gums
  • Pus around the gumline

Causes of Periodontist

Gingivitis occurs when bacteria in dental plaque cause inflammation of the gums. If untreated, this can progress to periodontitis. In periodontitis:

  • Bacterial toxins and the body’s immune response break down gum tissue and supporting bone.
  • Over time, this damage weakens the structures holding the teeth in place.
  • Without treatment, this can lead to tooth loss.

Treating Periodontitis

A Waterpik™ Water Flosser combines pulsation and pressure to clean where brushing and traditional floss may not reach. Clinical research shows that for reversing gingivitis and improving gum health, the Waterpik™ Water Flosser is up to 50% more effective than string floss.

Treatment of periodontitis depends on its severity and may include:

  • Professional cleaning procedures (scaling and root planing)
  • Medications to control infection
  • Surgery in advanced cases

Your dentist or periodontist can provide a diagnosis and create a tailored treatment plan.
